A period Edwardian home in Albert Park. The original verandah floor had deteriorated beyond repair — so we took it back to the substrate and rebuilt it from scratch, matching the home’s original pattern with a new tessellated installation.
The homeowners had lived with a failing verandah floor for years. The original tessellated tiles had cracked, lifted, and been poorly patched over time, leaving the entrance to their period home looking nothing like it once did. They wanted a result that honoured the home’s Victorian heritage — not just a quick fix.
The brief was clear: strip everything back, prepare the substrate properly, and install a new tessellated floor that looked like it had always been there.
Before a single tile went down, we cleared the existing failed floor and prepared a reinforced concrete bed — the kind of base that ensures a tessellated floor lasts for generations, not just years. The site was cordoned off and work proceeded in stages to minimise disruption to the household.
For the pattern, we worked with the homeowners to select a design that complemented the home’s Edwardian architecture. The final selection features a geometric pinwheel border in charcoal, slate blue, ivory and terracotta, with a centrepiece panel anchored by detailed floral medallion tiles. The outer border and transition strip were precision-cut to meet the existing brick and concrete thresholds cleanly.
Every tile was laid by hand, individually set and levelled. The result is a floor with the kind of precision and rhythm that machine installation simply can’t replicate.
The completed Albert Park verandah is one of the most elaborate patterns in our portfolio. The multi-colour scheme — charcoal, slate blue, terracotta and ivory — gives the home a presence from the street that immediately signals its era. The floral medallion centrepieces, set against the geometric pinwheel field, are the kind of detail that stops people in their tracks.
The homeowners now have an entrance that does justice to their home’s age and character — and a floor built to last another hundred years.
