Custom Pattern Design

Heritage tessellated tile patterns were often unique to their street, their builder, or their era. When a pattern isn’t available off the shelf, or when you’re extending an existing floor and need it to match exactly, we design a custom version faithful to the original.

This is the most technically demanding work we do. We don’t just draw something that looks similar. We research the period, measure the existing tiles, and design something that could credibly have been laid when the house was built. That distinction matters — a floor that looks right versus one that just looks like it’s trying.

What’s included:

  • On-site measurement and full pattern documentation
  • Research into period-appropriate design conventions for the property’s era
  • Custom pattern design presented as a scaled digital layout
  • Colour and tone selection matched to existing tiles or the property palette
  • Revisions until the design is approved
  • Specification of all tile types: field, border, feature, and transition
  • Custom cutting plan for non-standard dimensions and border mitres
  • Full pattern documentation provided to the client for future reference
  • Option to proceed to supply and installation (see Supply & Install)

We keep things simple, transparent, and focused on getting your project right.

Who we service

Home Owners Adding to an Existing Floor

You're extending a verandah, adding a path, or renovating an adjacent area. The new section needs to match what's already there. The existing pattern might not be commercially available, but it has to look continuous.

Architects on Heritage Projects

You're working within a heritage overlay and need to specify a tessellated tile floor that's demonstrably period-accurate. We provide design documentation, pattern references, and specifications for your submission.

Builders on Heritage Renovations

Your client has a specific reference — a neighbouring property, a historical photo, a surviving tile fragment. It needs to be matched as closely as possible. That's what we do.

Developers with Heritage Obligations

Your development includes a heritage building or sits in a heritage precinct. The tile design needs to satisfy council and look authentic. We design to that standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Victorian and Edwardian tessellated patterns followed fairly well-established conventions tied to the period and building type. We work from pattern catalogues, heritage surveys, and our own archive of Melbourne tile work. We won't put something down that doesn't belong.

Often, yes. A clear photo usually gives us enough to identify tile sizes, proportions, and the basic geometry of the pattern. On-site measurement is always better, but photos are a good starting point and often enough to get the design going.

That's fine too. We can design something that draws on tessellated tile conventions but is adapted for your brief. Just say so upfront and we'll work from there.
