A red brick period home in Hawthorn needed a tessellated verandah floor to match the character of the house. We supplied and installed a full pattern in warm tones — taupe, black, terracotta and cream — from the front path to the front door.
This Hawthorn property had everything going for it — beautiful red brick, ornate leadlight, original joinery — except for the verandah floor, which had never been properly finished. The homeowners wanted a tessellated tile floor that completed the picture: a design complex enough to honour the home’s Edwardian bones, but cohesive enough that it looked like it had been there from the beginning.
The project covered the full verandah from the front gate path through to the entrance landing at the front door.
We worked closely with the homeowners during the design stage to select a pattern that sat naturally with the property’s warm red brick and dark timber joinery. The chosen design is a large-scale repeating geometric with a star-and-diamond field, accented by decorative floral rosette tiles at regular intervals. The colour palette — warm taupe, jet black, russet terracotta, ivory and accent blue — draws directly from the tones already present in the brickwork and door surrounds.
The installation runs from the front path landing at the gate, up two steps and across the full verandah to the front door threshold. Each level was laid separately with consistent grout lines and clean transitions between the landings and risers. The border is finished with a simple dark soldier course that frames the whole composition and ties it to the surrounding brick edging.
The finished floor is exactly what this home needed. Stand at the gate and the whole facade reads as a single piece — the tiles, the brick, the leadlight, the timber. The scale of the pattern suits the generous verandah proportions, and the warm palette means it works in full sun and in shade without losing depth or contrast.
From path to door, the Hawthorn installation is one of the most photographed floors in our portfolio — and it’s easy to see why.
